Scottish Smolt Data Collation Project Published

3 Jul 2014

The Marine Scotland Science commissioned SFCC project entitled: Collation of Available Datasets on Smolt Populations in Scotland to Assess Migration Run Times, is now published.

The full report is available to read

Thank you to all Trusts and academic institutions for the considerable time they have invested in collating and supplying data for this project.

This project was commissioned by Marine Scotland Science, and undertaken in the context of the National Research and Monitoring Strategy for Diadromous Fish (NRMSD) to investigate the potential for interactions between diadromous fish and wind, wave and tidal renewable energy developments. The smolt data provided here will be used to ascertain the migration run timings for smolt populations at specific locations along the Scottish Coast, while also assessing fish body length variation as related to their suitability for carrying implantable acoustic tags.

This collaborative approach has provided a showcase of how data collected at a local level, can be capable of informing research of a national-scale. Marine Scotland Science have already undertaken a preliminary analysis of the data and wish to take forward 16 of the supplied smolt migration datasets for full analysis.

The SFCC advocate the development of a national smolt database to house all smolt migration data within a standard format as collected by Marine Scotland Science and The Fisheries Trust network.

If you have any questions or feedback on this project please contact the SFCC in the first instance.
